The North Carolina class battleships were amongst the first Post-Washington Treaty battleships as well as the first of the US Navy fast battleships. They were built to most of the restrictions specifically imposed by the Second London Naval Treaty, so the initial design limited the displacement of these new ships to 35000 tons and a main battery of 14″ guns. Probably the most memorable contest of the 1981 season. It was the first home game since the death of the legendary Bob Ufer who passed away just 12 days earlier. The fans payed tribute to Bob with a moment of silence. The game itself was classic. The Fighting Illini put together their best squad in 18 years.
